LLaMA (Meta)

Mistral AI
Mistral AI is a French company, founded by former researchers from Google DeepMind and Meta. Their models are known for efficiency: they often outperform larger competitors with fewer parameters.
The key innovation is Mixture of Experts (MoE): an architecture where only a portion of the model parameters is activated for each task. The result is higher speed and lower costs at equal quality.
The most important models are Mistral Large 3 (the flagship with 41 billion active parameters and a context window of 256,000 tokens), Mistral NeMo (a compact 12B model under the permissive Apache 2.0 license, ideal for self-hosting), and Codestral (specialized in code generation in more than 80 programming languages).
